A Year of Uncertainty to a New Beginning: Reflecting on 2024 and Embracing 2025
Dear Readers
As a mom, wife, certified pediatric RN, and nursing educator, balancing personal and professional responsibilities is always a delicate act. Over the past several months, my family faced a profoundly challenging period that required my full attention and presence.
A Shocking Discovery in July
In July of 2024, my husband, Chris, received test results from his family doctor that were rather concerning. A blood CT scan had revealed possible bi-hilar adenopathy around his lungs. After numerous tests, the possibility of cancer became increasingly likely. As each test ruled out other conditions, the weight of a potential cancer diagnosis grew heavier on our hearts. This uncertainty took a significant emotional toll on Chris, myself, and our entire family.
Facing the Toughest Questions
Explaining the situation to our children, aged 9 and 5, was one of the most heart-wrenching experiences I've ever faced. Watching Chris, their biggest hero, answer the question, "Daddy, are you dying?" devastated me. We had to navigate conversations about why their father was more irritable, sad, and distant than usual. Discussing topics like cancer, mortality, and the fragility of life with young minds is something no parent is ever truly prepared for.
A Nurse’s Perspective Transformed
As a pediatric oncology nurse, I’ve always strived to deliver care with empathy. However, this personal journey has profoundly impacted my perspective. Experiencing the fear and uncertainty firsthand has deepened my understanding of the emotional and psychological burdens families endure. It’s reinforced the importance of compassionate communication, timely information sharing, and holistic support for both patients and their families.
A Diagnosis That Brought Relief
In a turn of events that filled us with immense relief and gratitude, just before Thanksgiving, we received the news that Chris’s condition was, in fact, NOT cancer. Instead, he was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, an inflammatory condition affecting the lymph nodes in and around the chest.
Our current plan includes adopting a non-inflammatory diet, regular exercise, and scheduling another PET scan in a few months to monitor any changes. The great news is that it has not affected any of his organs, and treating it would be more stress on his body than having the condition.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As we step into 2025, I am filled with renewed energy and a fresh perspective. I am committed to re-engaging with this incredible community, sharing more content, insights, and support. This experience has been a catalyst for personal and professional growth, and I am eager to bring these lessons into our shared journey.
Thank you for standing by me. Here's to a year of new beginnings, deeper connections, and continued learning.
Warm regards,
Nurse Lizzie
